Gabriel Muñoz at Casa Cultura: A Night of Puerto Rican Cuatro, Culture, and Tradition

Updated: 6 days ago

Casa Cultura is proud to welcome Gabriel Muñoz for a special night of music rooted in culture, tradition, and Puerto Rican pride.

Recognized as one of the premier Puerto Rican cuatro players, Gabriel Muñoz has dedicated his work to preserving and elevating Puerto Rico’s national instrument. His upcoming concert at Casa Cultura will be more than a performance. It will be a cultural experience, an evening filled with the sound, memory, and spirit of Puerto Rico.

The concert will take place on Saturday, May 23, with doors opening at 6:00 PM, at Casa Cultura, 750 Cass Street, Trenton, NJ. Tickets are available at www.casaculturacenter.org

In the skilled hands of Gabriel Muñoz, the Puerto Rican cuatro does more than sing. It tells powerful stories of ancestry, resistance, identity, and joy. These melodies, born in the mountainous regions of Puerto Rico, now echo on stages around the world.

From local performances in Trenton, New Jersey, to iconic venues like the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress, Gabriel has become a proud ambassador of traditional Puerto Rican music. As the cuatro finds new meaning in modern spaces, Gabriel’s mission feels even more important: to preserve, elevate, and share the sound of Puerto Rico with the world.

Más que un Instrumento Musical

“The cuatro is the national instrument of Puerto Rico, but outside of the island, it is still not as widely known,” Gabriel shared in his interview with Casa Cultura. “What I do is not commercial music. It is not jazz. It is not pop. It is deeply cultural.”

Rooted in jíbaro music and Puerto Rican folklore, the cuatro carries the soul of a people shaped by resilience, creativity, and pride. For Gabriel, each performance is more than a concert. It is an act of cultural preservation. It is a way of keeping memory alive.

“Even when people do not fully understand the music, especially those outside of our culture,” he says, “they feel it. That emotional connection is powerful.”

That is what guests can expect at Casa Cultura: not just music, but a connection to Puerto Rican history, identity, and emotion. For those who grew up hearing the cuatro, the night will feel familiar and deeply personal. For those discovering the instrument for the first time, it will be an invitation into one of Puerto Rico’s most beautiful cultural traditions.

Música con Misión y Raíces

Gabriel is not only a performer. He is also a cultural educator, mentor, and keeper of tradition. Through his work with educational institutions, oral history projects, and youth programs, he is helping ensure that the legacy of the cuatro continues for future generations.

“Yes, I experiment with other genres,” he explains. “The cuatro is versatile. But I always stay grounded in traditional music. That is my foundation.”

For Gabriel, the mission is clear: to spread Puerto Rican heritage through music. As the cuatro continues to cross borders, he imagines a future where the instrument is celebrated globally, not only by Puerto Ricans, but by people everywhere who are moved by its sound.

“I want to take this music to places that never expected it,” Gabriel says, “and let them feel the rhythm and emotion of Puerto Rico.”

El Cuatro en la Música Global

We also asked Gabriel about the growing presence of the cuatro in global pop music, especially after Bad Bunny’s latest album featured the instrument, played by two of Gabriel’s close friends.

“There has been debate in the traditional music scene about this,” Gabriel says. “But to me, it is a big moment. Bad Bunny included the cuatro. Our sound is now reaching millions.”

For Gabriel, this is not a loss of tradition. It is an opening.

“We have spent years trying to get this music heard,” he says. “Now it is in the mainstream. That is powerful. That opens doors.”

The cuatro’s presence in popular music introduces new audiences to a sound that has carried Puerto Rican history for generations. It creates curiosity. It invites people to listen more deeply. And it reminds the world that Puerto Rican culture continues to evolve while staying rooted in its origins.

De Trenton al Mundo: Una Historia Boricua

From Trenton, New Jersey, to international stages, Gabriel Muñoz is building a legacy grounded in authenticity, passion, and Puerto Rican pride.

His dream is simple and powerful: to see the cuatro recognized around the world, not only as a beautiful instrument, but as a symbol of Puerto Rican identity.

On Saturday, May 23, Casa Cultura invites the community to experience that dream up close. Join us for an intimate evening with Gabriel Muñoz and the Puerto Rican cuatro, a night that celebrates culture, tradition, and the music that carries our stories forward.
